Diabetes is not a barrier for vacation, all you have to do is to take special precautions to beat the summer heat and anticipate the challenging situations. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a big challenge to beat the summer heat during vacations. Dehydration can happen on these very hot summer days whether you have diabetes or not. In diabetes, dehydration also can occur when the normal blood glucose level range is not under control. When blood glucose is elevated, it can lead to an increase in the body&#8217;s excretion of urine. Hence for people with diabetes, drinking extra water is particularly important because dehydration can cause falsely high blood sugar readings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is good to know the signs and\r\nsymptoms of heat exhaustion since the risk is higher in people with diabetes<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Feeling dizzy <\/li><li>Excessive sweat<\/li><li>Muscle cramps<\/li><li>Headache<\/li><li>Rapid heartbeat <\/li><li>Nausea <\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If heat exhaustion is not taken care of, it can quickly progress to heatstroke. Heatstroke is a more urgent matter and is a medical emergency. Hence if the above-mentioned symptoms occur immediately take rest in a cool place and drink more water.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nutrition\r\nTips for Managing Diabetes During Summer<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The average person should consume two litres of fluid of water per day. For people with diabetes, this is particularly important because dehydration can cause false high blood sugar readings. Unlike a person without diabetes, it is not advisable to drink fruit juices, tender coconut water etc. However, other than the plain drinking water you can take<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Diluted skimmed buttermilk<\/li><li>Lemon \/ Tomato juice (without sugar)<\/li><li>Iced tea (without sugar)<\/li><li>Drinking water with Pudina \/ Tulsi leaves\/ Jeera<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Include plenty of high fibre green leafy vegetables like cabbage, greens, plantain stem, bitter gourd etc.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During summer certain food items are available in\r\nmarket which can help you to handle summer heat such as<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Watermelon\/Muskmelon<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the normal blood sugar level range is well under control, a small portion (100 gms\/ serving) of these fruits can be consumed as whole fruit and not as a juice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Raw Mangoes<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raw mangoes can be taken as juice along with pudina\r\nleaves or it can be prepared as a soup<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cucumber<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cucumber\r\nis a low calorie vegetable which can be included in form of salad or &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;raitha or as a minted cucumber lassi\r\n(without sugar).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gourd family (watery) vegetables<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can include gourd family vegetables like ash\r\ngourd, snake gourd, bottle gourd, bitter gourd on daily basis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you are on vacation you may not be able to get\r\nexactly the same food items which are recommended by the dietitian, so it is\r\nalways better to travel with snacks like whole wheat bread,\/multi grain bread\/\r\nrice flakes\/puffed rice etc in pre-measured serving sizes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is better to restrict fried foods and avoid\r\nfoods with heavy black charring from the grill. It may add flavor, but these\r\nblack marks may be carcinogenic<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of white refined cereals like maida, white\r\nrawa &nbsp;etc include whole grains and colour\r\nyour plate with rainbow colour low calorie vegetables.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summer\/Vacation\r\nTips<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Exercise in a\r\ncool place such as an air-conditioned gym, or early in the morning or later in\r\nthe evening and not at the extreme temperatures. Take liquids before and after exercise.<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wear a comfortable, closed-toe shoe and &nbsp;should change the socks often to prevent\r\nsoreness and blisters on feet. <\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check your blood\r\nglucose levels on daily basis and more often during sick days. Remember that\r\nheat can cause blood glucose levels to fluctuate. <\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Store your blood\r\nglucose meter, strips and insulin in a cool, dry place. Do not store insulin in\r\nextreme temperatures. Never store insulin in the freezer or in direct sunlight as far as possible.<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Always carry your diabetes identification card that\r\nindicates you have diabetes.<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer is a time for outdoor\r\npicnics, amusement parks, road trips and vacations. It is a time to enjoy with family,\r\nfriends. To enjoy the vacation to the fullest, &nbsp;follow the above recommended tips.
